The automated mobile racking

The automated mobile racking was developed by SSI Schäfer and is exclusively marketed since autumn 2005.

Award for World Innovation – Automated mobile racking recognized as “Best Product 2006” of LogiMAT

Only a few months after the product launch SSI SCHÄFER won an award for their automated mobile racking system in the category “Procurement – Conveying – Storing”. The world innovation won recognition as “Best Product 2006” of LogiMAT 2006.

Benno Reichmuth, manager of the business division Dynamic Systems at SSI SCHÄFER Switzerland accepted the award at the celebration in the evening of the first day of the fair. Reichmuth had pushed the development of this system with his team in Switzerland. The product innovation has caught a lot of attention since its launch in the fall of last year.

Benno Reichmuth: “The system combines the compact storage of the mobile racking technology with the efficiency of an automated operation. We see big potential in this area, for example in the deep-freeze warehouse segment.”

SSI SCHÄFER is the exclusive producer of an automated mobile racking system combined with a laser-guided, unmanned VNA vehicle. The components of the system include the mobile racking, the VNA vehicle, vehicle guidance and material flow systems and conveyor technology.

On a conveyor system consisting of standard elements, pallets or skeleton containers to be stored are transported to the relevant opened rack aisle(s) of the mobile racking system and put onto transfer positions for automatic pick up by a VNA truck. Coordinated by customized warehouse control, an automated VNA truck picks up the stored goods from the transfer positions and approaches the allocated storage location in the rack aisle. The entire material flow is operatorless.

Due to this technology, an opening width of the rack aisle, which is 50 percent smaller than that of non-automated mobile racking systems, is sufficient for the automated mobile racking system with the use of standardized VNA trucks. Storage and retrieval processes are faster and, above all, continuous. The automated racking operation allows an optimal use of the VNA vehicles in multi-shift environments.
